The landing page would benefit from some rework, but I do not think a copy change here and there will get us to where we want to go.
- what is the high level goal?
- what metrics do we use to determine success relative to that goal?
- how does this change fit within those metrics?
Milton Friedman is mentioned specifically because the video clip on the landing page shows Milton Friedman specifically mentioning the concept of ecash, which concisely presents the broader goal of this technology.
Any move from the specific to the general is imo default bad, absent any case for impact. The market of "the whole world" for "better money" already suffers from being too broad and too difficult to meaningfully address. If anything, we should be getting more specific.
Arguably, we should lose Friedman because the last decade or so of crypto markets offer compelling evidence crypto consumers do not care about economic theory. It's certainly important that we understand it as a team and keep it in mind when building the tech...but only a minority of people understand economics, and an even smaller minority of them are interested in the correct ideas.
So --- this change is not necessarily a bad idea --- but...
- we are planning an impact-focused overhaul anyway
- existing copy is consistent with existing framework and rationale of site / rebrand
- impact of this kind of change is unclear
This copy change is part of a set of changes that John, Antony, and I have discussed.
I understand that Friedman was used because of the quote, but I am pointing out for a while now that people think we claim to follow friedman's economic theories and don't get we just reference his vision of an eCash network.
Also, people who make promotional material add or invoke Friedman, where he doesn't need to be. (Similar to adding David Chaum everywhere). Lots of outlets, media, exchanges, and services like CMC also get that wrong, when giving a basic overview. It all stems from this copy.
This change is meant to keep the idea in the same vein as the copy, without confusing people with specific names like Milton. As you say, most don't care either way, but we eliminate the regularly occurring confusion.
As for the copy:
The actual message is that we are pointing out the basics of Bitcoin/eCash:
It is sound money and freedom technology. As in "Cypherpunk" and "Austrian", which has a meaning and a place within crypto. In this case describing it as what it is and with better introductory copy, to give people an overview of these basic concepts without invoking names like rothbard, friedman, finney, etc.
We have the quote carousel that includes household names and also talk about these two big concepts, tech liberation and sound money.
The website needs a visual overhaul, and lots of redundant or counterproductive copy removed, but some copy makes perfect sense and just needs small edits. This is one of them.
But let me undo this diff and we can discuss all planned changes on telegram in the website page and prepare it in the doc I shared.
ok, sounds like I was just sleeping on this discussion.

this is enough of a reason to move fwd here
